Former Ohio State and four-star commitment for 2023 George Washington III (Dayton, Ohio) released the top five on Tuesday morning, and Virginia made the cut alongside Louisville, Dayton, Michigan and Wake Forest.
Washington, a 6’2″ shooting guard originally from Louisville, committed to Ohio State again in November 2021. He moved to Dayton, Ohio to play high school basketball at Chaminade Julienne.
Washington was the first to commit to Ohio’s 2023 enlistment class last fall, but the Buckeyes family has since added three more commitments this year, including two in August. Although none of these were rangers, the Buckey family has been openly and aggressively in pursuit of other rangers in the class of 2023. Among these recruits are Four star Tyson Chatmanwho also put Virginia in his final quota and is due to announce his decision on Tuesday night, and LeBron James’ son Bronny James.
Chatman, James and Washington were in Columbus on official visits the weekend of September 3 when the Buckeyes hosted Notre Dame Football Club. Two days later, George Washington III announced that he was getting out of Ohio and reopening his enlistment.
UVA was reached out immediately and has been in constant contact with Washington ever since. Washington, who visited Virginia during his initial enlistment last fall, had planned to make a megaphone call with Tony Bennett on Monday night, but it is now reported that Bennett will visit Washington in person on Tuesday.
“Coach (Tony) Bennett is a Hall of-Fame coach. He’s one of the best schools to do that and they’re one of the top ACC schools,” Tell Washington’s Joe Tipton from On3.
One of the four-star potential players, George Washington III is the 106th player in the 2023 class of all 247 sports as well as the state’s 18th shooting guard and Ohio’s No. 2 enlisted. The 247 industry rankings place Washington at 76th overall and the No. 9 shooting ranger in the country.
Virginia hopes to secure at least one verbal commitment in the class of 2023 to join the four-star category Blake Buchanan (Corr d’Alene, Aiden) and Elijah Gertrude (Jersey City, NJ). In addition to George Washington III, UVA has provided its latest cut lists for:
