ATLANTA, GA (CBS46) – President Joe Biden’s invitation to the Atlanta Braves to visit the White House next week is infuriating Republicans.
Biden hosts the 2021 World Series champion at the White House on Monday, the same time the Braves visit the Washington Nationals for the last time this season.
Republicans are signaling support for Biden and Democrats in moving the 2021 MLB All-Star game from Truist Park in protest of Georgia’s new voter registration laws, a move Republicans said has cost Georgia $100 million in lost revenue.
The decision to move the All-Star Game was made by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.
“There is no escaping the fact that Joe Biden’s lies cost the Georgians,” said GNC spokesman Garrison Douglas. Biden’s Lies About Georgia’s Election Integrity Act Were So Terrible, Washington Post Give ‘Four Pinocchio. “
Douglas also said that Democratic nominee for Governor Stacey Abrams has been given “two Pinocchio. U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, who is fighting a tight re-election battle with Republican contender Herschel Walker, also He said He’s “respectful”[ed]MLB’s decision to withdraw the game from Georgia.
Earlier this year, US Representatives wrote. Buddy Carter and Barry Loudermilk letter to Manfred, asking him how “MLB will compensate for the damage done to the state of Georgia by moving the 2021 MLB All-Star game out of Georgia in response to the baseless attacks on the state’s Election Integrity Act.”
“According to Georgia’s Secretary of State, more than 850,000 Georgians cast ballots in person or returned absentee ballots,” Carter and Ludermilk wrote. “Compared to turnout for early voting in the last primaries, this turnout represented a 168% increase over the 2018 election, which was the last gubernatorial primaries.”
Carter represents much of the southern and coastal regions of early Georgia, including Savannah, while District 11 of Loudermilk includes much of Metro Atlanta’s northern suburbs, including Marietta and Smyrna.
“It is estimated that moving the game from the state has cost local businesses, many of which are minority-owned businesses and have had great difficulty recovering from the pandemic, at more than $100 million,” the congressmen wrote. “While we are pleased that the Atlanta Braves finally overcame this politicization and won the 2021 World Championship, we are saddened that the MLB fell victim to pervasive lies about what state law really does and was bullied into taking the All-Star Game out of Georgia.
“Any allegations of voter suppression have been completely debunked, yet your institution has failed to accept any responsibility for the harm your mischaracterization has caused.”
Manfred announced that the 2021 All-Star Game will take place in Denver instead of Atlanta. It also moved its 2021 project out of town, According to CBS Newstwo days after Biden agreed to move the game from Atlanta in an interview with ESPN.
“I think today’s professional athletes are acting incredibly responsibly. I will support them very much to do that. People look up to them,” Biden said.
According to the Associated Press, Biden will visit September 26 about a week before the conclusion of the 2022 regular season and the start of the playoffs. The Braves beat the Houston Astros in six games last year and are currently locked in a tight battle with the New York Mets for the Eastern National League pennant.
The MLB pre-season begins on October 7.
