Orlando City beat SAC Republic 3-0 to win the US Open

Orlando, Florida (AFP) – Facundo Torres scored in the 75th minute and then scored a penalty to give Orlando City their first-ever title with a 3-0 victory over the Sacramento Republic in the US Open Cup final on Wednesday night.

Torres’ penalty kick in the 80th minute sealed the score in favor of the Lions, who had not won a title since joining MLS in 2015. Orlando native Benji Michel added an injury-time goal.

The SAC Republic, who plays for the USL, was looking to become the second lower-tier team to win the Open Cup in a quarter century. The Rochester Rhinoceros won the title in 1999.

Torres’ first goal came from a flick for Michel, a local player signed before the 2019 season. The Uruguay goal got the losing fans at Exploria stadium chanting “We want the cup!”

Michel missed in the penalty area to make way for a Torres penalty, then scored in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
