Musical West Celebrates Great American Fun With Introducing Damen Yank

Hit! Baseball is back, and so is the latest production of Western Musical Theatre (MTW). Long Beach’s premiere theater company is pleased to announce the return of the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical Damn Yankees to its theaters on select nights from October 14-30. Telling the story of a man who risks his life, wife, and soul in the hope that his favorite team wins, Damn Yankees is sure to delight sports and theater fans alike. Tickets range from $20 to $96 each and are available by phone at 562-856-1999 or online at

Based on the novel “The Year the Yankees Lost the Banner” by Douglas Wallop, Damn Yankees is a blockbuster on Broadway and has won seven Tony Awards, including Best Music. The musical debuted in 1955, and tells the story of middle-aged baseball fanatic Joe Boyd, who exchanges his soul with the devil for a chance to lead his favorite team to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees. The winning score for Adler & Ross and George Abbott’s Satanic Book made this musical sports comedy a true American classic.

“For the first time in a while, Musical Theater West is sticking with original production to showcase classical music in all its glory,” said Paul Jarman, Executive Director of Musical Theater West. “We thought it was time to bring back the Damn Yankees, a patriotic treasure perfect for the Halloween and baseball season. We hope everyone will join us for a fanatical night of entertainment, from theater buffs to sports fans and anyone in between.”

The Damn Yankees were last on the MTW stage in 1996, the year the New York Yankees won the World Series. Featuring audience favorites such as “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO.” and “Heart” and “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets,” Damn Yankees is a hilarious Faustian festival that celebrates love, baseball, and the importance of the escape clause. Fans can represent their favorite sports team at All Star Theme Night while enjoying a subtitled ASL special on Friday, October 21, and competing in the “Date with the Devil” costume contest on Friday, October 28.

This classic production will be directed by West Alum director, actress and musician Cynthia Ferrer, who was last seen on the MTW stage as Ursula in The Little Mermaid. The musical direction will be provided by Matthew Smedal, whose credits include music director and Broadway conductor Mrs. Doubtfire by Jerry Zaks at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. The demonic dance moves will be choreographed by multi-talented Alexis Carra Girbés, who has been seen as Sherry on the mini-series “Fosse/Verdon” as well as on and off Broadway on shows like Wicked, Sweet Charity, Fosse (1st National Tour) and Pirate Queen.

The Damn Yankees will premiere in Long Beach on select dates, October 14 through October 30, 2022 at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts on the Cal State Long Beach campus. Tickets are currently $20-$96 and are available for purchase by phone at 562-856-1999 or online at Fees may apply. More information, a full range of offers, and additional details can be found at
