Steve Serby reviews NFC East as he gives The Post a split before 2022 NFL season.
1. Philadelphia Eagles
Fitness Trainer: Nick Syriani
2021 record: 9-8
Win O/U: 9.5
The main additions: WR AJ Brown, DE Haason Reddick, CB James Bradberry, DT Jordan Davis, LB Nakobe Dean, LB Kyzir White, S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, WR Zach Pascal, G Cam Jurgens
Main departures: J. Brandon Brooks, RB Jordan Howard, D. Ryan Kerrigan, CB Stephen Nelson, S. Rodney MacLeod, D.T. Hassan Ridgway, OLP Gerard Avery, LB Alex Singleton, WR McHollins, LB Jennard Avery, WR JJ Arcega-Whiteside, WR Galen Regor
First and aim: The trade for Brown pairing him with WR DeVonta Smith could be a godsend for quarterback Jalen Hurts. Quez Watkins is a nice WR3 and Dallas Goedert could be in the top five. The elite O line anchored by veteran C Jason Kelce is booked by formidable LT Jordan Mailata and RT athlete Lane Johnson. RB Miles Sanders could thrive if he could stay on the field, though Kenneth Jenwell has better hands in passing game and his eye on yardage and goal line role. Reddick (23.5 sacks over the past two seasons) is upgrading the pass dash. DT Javon Hargrave (7.5 sacks) made his Pro Bowl debut. Davis, a first-round pick, is a rare 340-pound specimen called to support a running defense. DT Fletcher Cox is back with a one-year deal to save on driving. Instinctive White scored 144 addresses last year with chargers. Gardner-Johnson upgraded what was in the average safety position. Bradbury and CB Darius Sly are veterans. Hurt is dangerous as a runner. QB Gardner Minshew is a high quality backup. The schedule is one of the easiest.
Fourth and long: Hurts (61.3 percent) needs to improve his accuracy and make a leap for the Eagles to get into the Super Bowl conversation. Passing race ranked 29th last season.
Serby says: 10-7. GM Howie Roseman crushed the festive season. Fly, eagles, fly.
Betting on the NFL?
2. Dallas Cowboys
Fitness Trainer: Mike McCarthy
2021 record: 12-5
Win O/U: 9.5
The main additions: WR Jalen Tolbert, OT Tyler Smith, WR James Washington, DE Dante Fowler Jr., OLB Anthony Barr, DE Sam Williams, WR-KR KaVontae Turpin
Main departures: WR Amari Cooper, WR Cedrick Wilson, OT La’el Collins, K Greg Zuerlein, DE Randy Gregory, TE Blake Jarwin, S Damontae Kazee, G Connor Williams, S Keanu Neal
First and aim: OLB Micah Parsons (13 sacks as DROY) is looking to 23 for a one-season record. DE DeMarcus Lawrence was sabotaged in his third Pro Bowl season with a broken foot. Sam Williams, who picked the second round, looks like a predator. It would be nice if Daniel Jones, Galen Hurts and Carson Wentz avoid throwing CB Tryvon Diggs (11 wits). What if giants drafted RG Zack Martin instead of Odell Beckham Jr.? RB Ezekiel Elliott is 27 with a 1938 career touch but still a double threat, especially if explosive backup Tony Pollard can take more of the load. Dak Prescott (career best completion percentage of 68.8 and 37 assists) is another year removed from his terrible ankle injury and WR CeeDee Lamb is the Elite. WR Michael Gallup, who will soon return from the AFC Champions League, is a big threat and T Dalton Schultz is a big target. DC Dan Quinn and OC Kellen Moore are highly regarded, as is intrepid Special Teams coordinator John Fassel.
Fourth and long: Jerry Jones no longer has a dominant O streak, especially with LT Tyron Smith, who has played 68 of his last 100 games, on the shelf until at least December. Rookie Tyler Smith is the putative starter. Cooper is in Cleveland, while Tolbert, the rookie receiver, would best be prepared to jump from South Alabama. McCarthy would once again find himself in a hot seat if he scored again the 127th most penalized team in the league. Lawrence needs Sam Williams as the ultimate passerby when he’s not Parsons. The positions of the middle and right handling are modest. Kicker is a concern.
Serby says: 9-8. The Blombardy boys haven’t won since Super Bowl 30. What can go wrong is.
3. Leaders of Washington
Fitness Trainer: Ron Rivera
2021 record: 7-10
Win O/U: 7.5
The main additions: QB Carson Wentz, WR Jahan Dotson, G Trai Turner, G Andrew Norwell, DT Phidarian Mathis, RB Brian Robinson, S Percy Butler, QB Sam Howell, TE Cole Turner, DE Efe Obada, WR Alex Erickson
Main departures: J Brandon Sherf, J Eric Flowers, S Landon Collins, DT Team Settle, DT Matt Ioannidis, WR-KRD Andre Carter, QB Kyle Allen
First and aim: Wentz should be a promotion on Taylor Heinicke, but his confidence and decision-making have been shaken. Scary Terry McLaurin is a $71 million Go-To Guy movie. RB Antonio Gibson is a double threat at 1,000 yards even with his choppy problems. JD Makisic is a dangerous player in third place. Five-time Pro Bowler Trai Turner replaces Sheriff. DE Chase Young is doing ACL and won’t be available early, but when he returns, he’ll join Montez Sweat and DTs Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne booking in the front fourth row. High school includes CB Kendall Fuller and S Camryn Curl. The kicking game is strong with P Tress Way and PK Joey Slye. The contenders had a win percentage of .462 last season.
Fourth and long: Young (knee) will miss the first four weeks. The Colts surrendered on Wentz, who melted with the playoffs on the line. to remember? Can WR Curtis Samuel recover from his injury in 2021? Can TE Logan Thomas recover from an ACL tear? Carter captured 8.4 yards each time the penalty kick returned and 25.1 yards when the kick returned to the charge. Who replaces him? To say the least about owner Dan Snyder the better.
Serby says: 8-9. We’ve seen the best of Carson Wentz.
4. New York Giants
Fitness Trainer: Brian Double
2021 record: 4-13
Win O/U: 6.5
The main additions: OLB Kayvon Thibodeaux, OT Evan Neal, WR Wan’Dale Robinson, QB Tyrod Taylor, C Jon Feliciano, G Mark Glowinski, RB Matt Breida, G Max Garcia, TE Daniel Bellinger, P Jamie Gillan, DE Jihad Ward
Main departures: CB James Bradbury, S Gabriel Peppers, TE Kyle Rudolph, QB Mike Glennon, QB Jake Froome, RB Defontay Booker, LP Lorenzo Carter, B Riley Dixon, TE Evan Ingram, J. Will Hernandez, NT Danny Shelton, T Nate Solder
First and Long: Saquon Barkley can make 91 passes again if he can stay healthy. Andrew Thomas LT is on the rise. Safety Xavier McKinney has the Pro Bowl written all over it. WR Kadarius Toney could break his ankle in the open field if he can stay in that open field. Daboll’s attack will get the best out of QB Daniel Jones. Robinson is a Jetberg. You’d rather play with DC Wink Martindale than against him. Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari have a chance to be impulsive terrifying and can help Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence. Graham Janow is a field-goal player with an 84 percent rate. Backup QB Tyrod Taylor is much better insurance than Glennon and Fromm.
Fourth and long: The future is now for Jones. or never. Line O would be better, but let’s not call it a constant. RT Neal is a goalkeeper, but there will be growing pains. Was WR Kenny Golladay playing a possum or what? Can a WR Sterling Shepard stay healthy? Be nice if Mark Bavaro can come out of retirement, but looks like Bellinger in TE. CB Aaron Robinson is an ongoing work opposite Adoree’ Jackson. Is left-footed Gilan more upgraded than Dixon?
Serby says: 7-10. The first year of the new system. At least they won’t be unwatchable.
