College coaches interested in hiring Kevin Willard in Maryland

College basketball watchers considered Kevin Willard’s arrival in Maryland a good hire, but it didn’t happen the kind of new hires that did. Perhaps with the merit of watching his early hiring success, though, some are starting to take notice.

In a survey of coaches asking who is the best officiant hire, Willard landed in third place on Wednesday CBSsports.com’s Candid Coaches Series By Gary Parish. He got only 12% of the votes behind him Shaheen Holloway (Seton Hall) and Sean Miller (Xavier), one point ahead of Duke John Sher (full list below).

“What he did at Seton Hall – with the lack of facilities in the background of the Old Guard schools in the Big East – is incredible. Now he has all the whistles and bells, and he’s a formidable recruiter. Now he has a massive recruiting area and a big place. I think in three years you’ll win Maryland with the Big Ten,” an anonymous coach told Parrish.

If that prediction proves true, it would be Maryland’s second Big Ten title, although the first came in a three-way tie in 2019 after stumbling late in the season from the top of the standings.

Another coach noted Willard’s track record of player development. In Seton Hall, he transformed into a relatively unknown recruit Miles Powell And the Sandro Mamokilashvili In the Best Big East Players of the Year.

“Kevin has proven to be a great coach who makes no excuses. He finds a neglected talent and makes it better like no one else in the country. With a great campus, great location, football money – and the way he develops his players – watch out,” he told Parrish.
